No one who can afford to buy a new house is going to look in an area that shows obvious signs of neglect.
So investors snatch up the land and build condos, rental and section 8 property. They dont want to live there either.
The money the investors make does not recirculate into the community, it leaves with them.e money the investors make does not recirculate into the community, it leaves with them.
If the Alderman was truly concerned about the people of the ward, Investors who were willing to bring jobs into the community would be sought out. Putting more people into a community which has no job opportunity does not reflect the best interest of home owners.
If you want to build up a community you start with jobs.
That way the community can support itself. Can you find one good resturant in the 34th ward that is not a franchise or has a dollar menu? There is a reason for that. It forces you to leave your community when you want to enjoy a meal out and spend money in another community, creating opportunity and jobs for the residents of that community.
Money spent outside of your community does not help increase the amount of tax dollars the city is willing to allocate to your neighborhood. Tax dollars returned are based on taxed collected.
The investors do not want to help you, A rapist has no compassion for his victom, they want to use you like toilet paper. The 34th ward has no one to lead this community into prosperity. Makeing outsiders money is not what a community leader is elected to do.

Were do you go when you lose your home? look at the cost of houses. who but the gainfully employed can consider purchasing a house. Many of these homes were originally built for less that $5,000. In the 1970 these homes had increased in value $20,000 to $30,000. In 1990 Homes had jumped $50,000 to $80,000.
Comparable properties in other neighborhoods were $125,000 to $250,000
The City realized it was loosing money in tax revenues in the 34th ward. Taxes were not high enough because houses were not selling for the ridicilous prices the investors would have liked. The sollution: Rebuild the 34th Ward. At the same time the city did not want private home owners to invest in the property and made it as unattractive a area as they could.
Streets left unrepaired, missing sidewalks, garbage filled vacant lots and there is money allocated to the ward office to repair and maintain the streets.
As raggedy as the streets are in the 34th ward only 111th west of the tracks up to about Wallace and Normal North to about 109th have recently been repaired. Streets that were repaired earlier were dug back up by the gas companies and left in a series of patch work
While Normal South from 111th to the end of the ward has been in need of repair for years. Amazingly the Aldermans office is less than two blocks from this pot hole on Normal which has been there for over 2 months.
In a time when there are more vehicles on the road than ever, What we need is more driving space and better visibility, Not planters obstructing our vision. That space could have been used to widen the street to ease traffic congestion. Other money is being spent on setting up blue lite police cameras and ticket cams which dot our neighborhood. Is it too unreasonable to think that maybe revenue money would be used to benefit the people who are paying them? How about fixing our streets?..The ones that need fixing. The ones we have been maneuvering around for months.
