SANDPAPER WET OR DRY IS THE KISS OF DEATH TO YOUR HEADLIGHTS FACTORY FINISH AND PROTECTIVE UV LAYER
DESPITE WHAT YOU MAY HAVE READ IN INTERNET FORUMS AND ADVERTISEMENT FOR HEADLIGHT CLEANING KITS. THERE IS A DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN OXIDATION, UV DAMAGE AND SURFACE DAMAGE.
YOU NEED TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE THREE.
Yellowing is caused by Ultra Violet rays from the sun.
With the UV layer intact the rays are effectively blocked from reaching the lens. The white oxidation which forms on top of the UV layer will turn yellow and brown from a
combination of ultra violet rays and contaminants.
THIS DOES NOT EFFECT THE LENS UNDERNEATH. THE CLARITY OF THIS LENS CAN BE FULLY RESTORED
However once this UV layer is severely damaged or removed
the Suns UV rays can reach the lens and cause it to turn yellow.
When this happens there is no recovery. The yellow will permeate the lens.
This yellowing is permanent.
At this point your lens will continue oxidize and now the lens is exposed to the effect of UV rays.
Now you have two problems.
Removing the surface oxidation will not remove the yellow tint in the lens nor can this yellow be sanded or polished away.
Once you choose to use abrasives on your lens,
